The name Kuro Yogan means “black lava” in Japanese, inspired by the dark volcanic textures that appear around the base of the piece. Above them, soft cream, smoky blue and warm earthy tones flow together in a reactive glaze that has developed entirely its own character in the kiln.
Inside, the glaze opens into an almost landscape-like pattern, with delicate lines and natural movement reminiscent of grasses, stone and mineral formations. The generous organic shape makes this bowl feel as much like a small ceramic artwork as a functional object.
Each Kuro Yogan bowl is individually shaped, glazed and fired by hand. The movement of the glaze and the textured surface can never be recreated in exactly the same way, making this piece truly unique.
