Make your own seashell palette
Today I want to share a special project with you that is not only practical but also reflects a love for the sea and nature. We’re going to make a painter’s palette from seashells you’ve found on the beach and then mount it inside a vintage chocolate tin from the thrift store. This project combines art, craft, and recycling, making it perfect for anyone who enjoys being creative and sustainable. Let’s get started!
What You Need
-
Seashells in various shapes and sizes
-
A vintage chocolate tin (found, for example, at a thrift store)
-
Strong glue (like epoxy or superglue)
-
Sandpaper (for a smooth finish)
-
Varnish for a glossy finish and to make the palette waterproof
Gather your materials
Go on an adventure to the beach and collect seashells in different shapes and sizes. Look for shells that are flat on one side so they fit easily inside the tin.
Visit a thrift store and look for a beautiful vintage chocolate tin. It’s a fun experience to browse through shops and find something special.
Clean the shells
Rinse the shells thoroughly with water and soap to remove sand and dirt. Let them dry completely.
Arrange the shells in the tin
Place the shells in the tin to see how they fit best. Try to create an interesting composition, keeping space for your paint.
Glue the shells in place
Use strong glue to stick the shells one by one inside the tin. Start with the largest shells and work your way to the smaller ones. Make sure each shell is firmly attached before continuing. Another option is to pour a layer of plaster in the tin and embed the shells in it.
Let the glue dry
Allow everything to dry well according to the glue package instructions.
Optional: Apply varnish
If you want, apply a layer of varnish for a glossy finish, extra protection, and to make your palette waterproof.
And voilà! You now have your own unique painter’s palette, inspired by the sea and made from recycled materials. This palette is not only functional but also a beautiful work of art in itself. Perfect for any creative soul wanting to show their love for nature. I enjoyed painting the palette afterward and then keeping it in the lid of the box.
A Few More Tips and Tricks
Color combinations: Choose shells in different colors to give your palette an extra dimension.
Personalize your palette: Add a personal touch by including little treasures like tiny glass beads or pieces of driftwood.
I hope this project inspires you to create your own unique painter’s palette. If you have any questions or want more creative ideas, feel free to let me know! 🌊🎨😊
